My friend of misery, μια προσωποκεντρική ανάλυση

Το 1991 όταν κυκλοφόρησε το Black Album των Metallica ήμουν στον στρατό. Σε μια έξοδό μου πήρα το διπλό βινύλλιο που το allrecords και το έλιωσα. Το αντέγραψα σε κασσέτα και το άκουα ασταμάτητα με το walkman. Κάτι σχόλια του στιλ "οι Metallica ξεπουλήθηκαν, έγιναν ποπ, φλώροι κλπ" εμένα με άφηναν αδιάφορο παρόλο που τους άκουα από το ξεκίνημά τους. Εγώ τότε άκουα από Slayer μέχρι Dee-Lite και Whitney Houston και δεν ντρεπόμουν για τίποτε.

Το Black Album ήταν μαγεία...Υπέροχα κομμάτια, άψογη παραγωγή.

Συμπάθησα αμέσως το My friend of misery, το οποίο ήταν προς το τέλος του δίσκου και κάπως παραγνωρισμένο. Παρατήρησα όμως πως προτιμούσα να ακούω την εισαγωγή και μετά το τέλος του κομματιού που ήταν μόνο ορχηστρικά μέρη. Εντόπισα κάτι το ιδιαίτερα ευγενές στη μελωδία του μπάσου...

Εισαγωγή και μετά το 3ο λεπτό. Κουπλέ και ρεφρέν με χαλούσαν.

Πριν λίγες μέρες έμαθα το γιατί. Η ζωή κάμνει κύκλους και τα ερωτήματα απαντώνται εν καιρώ. Ψάχνοντας στο YouTube για να ακούσω το κομμάτι βρήκα αμέτρητες διασκευές ερασιτεχνών μπασιστών αλλά και μια καταπληκτική συνέντευξη του Jason Newsted που εξηγεί πώς έγραψε το κομμάτι του μπάσου με σκοπό να γίνει το ορχηστρικό κομμάτι του δίσκου όπως μας συνήθιζαν. Οι Lars και James διεφώνησαν αλλά χρησιμοποίησαν το θέμα για να γράψουν το My friend of misery. Είναι το μόνο κομμάτι του δίσκου που παίρνει credit ως συνθέτης.
